This is an example of a cartogram, a cartogram map is used to show people different types of data they may be interested in. Cartograms show people the data of interest by enlarging or shrinking the country, depending on the correlation to the data of interest. This cartogram shows population distribution, as you can see the countries are distorted in size to show the relationship with how much of the worlds population they hold.
